(7) The Grandprix of Mistranslation: Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? (Japanese version) |
There are many American songs released in Japan with Japanese titles to let more people know. Maybe you know the song titled "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?", but do you know the Japanese one? The answer is "Do You Know (the lady) Miss New Orleans?" I have wondered who named it. Was he/she the person that didn't know English at all and translated it? Of course the original meaning is "I left New Orleans long time ago. Do you know how much I feel lonely and miss it?" |

It was written in 1946 after a few years Dixieland Jazz bands revived. Most of jazz musicians moved from New Orleans to Chicago, and to New York from the middle of 1910s to 1920s. I guess that those musicians played this song with feeling nostalgia. Louis Armstrong made a big hit. Trans. by Kisshi |
