(9) Movie "FIVE PENNIES" Five Pennies
(Japanese version) translated by Yoshie Kishida

Red Nichols, Jimmy Dorsey, Arthur Schut, Vic Berton, Miff Mole, Eddie Lang

Danny Kaye and Satchmo

It was the biographical movie shown in 1958, "Red Nichols and His Five Pennies".

I really enjoyed Danny Kaye and Satchmo's duets back and forth. Even now, I can't forget Satchmo's words I listened to 40 years ago.

"Do you want me to play the same as the last one? Then, do you tell bush warblers to do so? "

Until Red Nichols met Satchmo, he always played with sheets of music. I have read that he arranged too much, and that scene showed it. When I was eighteen, I went to see the same movie to Hibiya Movie Theater with one of my friends who also loved music, nine times! It was enough to remember completely all of songs used in that film.

This song was written by Danny Kaye's wife Sylvia Fine.

By the way, did anyone see the TV program that Danny Kaye conducted New York Philharmonic Orchestra on NHK? It was the masterpiece of masterpieces. All of members in the orchestra burst out laughing. Anyway, it was too funny to explain in the detail! Please ask anyone admirable to show that video!!
