1959年に物凄い映画「５つの銅貨」が出来た。The Five PenniesとはRed Nicholsというコルネット奏者の実在のバンド名である。 Dany Kayeがレッド・ニコルスを演じる。Louis Armstrongも共演する。ジャズに関連する映画では一番といってよい。

日本では年明けの1960年1月に封切された。大学1年の時で、高校時代からの楽友、鈴木光男と日比谷映画劇場に３回通い、３回ずつ９回も見た。そんなことは私の生涯の中でたった１回の出来事である。

ここで歌われた歌はダニー・ケイ夫人のSylvia Fineの作詞・作曲になるもので、３曲とも同じコード進行で書かれているのがみそだ。自分で歌を書く人がいたら、真似すると面白いのだ。

この映画を見ていない人は、DVDでも買って見ないと損をする。
