1970年代の初めにFour Freshmen group#4が来日し、そのコンサートで初めて聴いた”After You”という歌にすっかり参ってしまいました。フォー・フレッシュメンは1954年に唄いだしています。その前にはケントン楽団が取り上げています。1945年にEllisが書いた曲です。Stan Kenton 1947 Vol.1に入っていました。

Voices in Modernにもバトラー大学での録音盤にも入っている曲ですが、この歌を書いた作曲家はS.Ellisとあるだけでした。何十年後、調べまくったところSeger Ellisのことです。

シガー・エリスといっても、アメリカでさえ忘れられた名前といってよいでしょう。20年代、30年代には歌手として唄いましたし、ピアニストでもありましたし、バンドリーダーとしても活躍していたのです。テキサス・ヒューストンの生まれで、91歳の長生きをしましたが、後半の人生を知る人がいないのです。

FFのロス・バーバーはこの歌が好きでしょうがありませんでした。自著の中に書いています。
